Shawnee 2010 Class Descriptions

1. Gordian Knot © – with Peggy Bingham
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

GordianHere is a brand new knot from Peg! Based on a very old quiltmaking pattern, this is an easy, contemporary approach to this fascinating pattern! In 1934, Nancy Cabot reported that this pattern is named after the mythological knot of Gordius, king of Phyrgia, who declared that the person who untied this knot would be the next rightful king of Phyrgia. When Alexander the Great entered Phyrgia, his solution to this knotty problem was slicing the ropes in half! No need to take those drastic measures with Peg’s easy-to-follow instructions!

Gordian Knot will include 24 quilt top options! This pattern will be fun to sew and beautiful to behold!

2. The Gilded Ladies – with Nancy Bowen
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

Gilded LadiesThe designs in this pattern were inspired by a turn of century Sears Roebuck catalog. Come and join us for our first ever sit and stitch hand only class at Quiltescape. We will be gathering around a cozy niche in the lodge sitting in large wing back chairs and leisurely stitching our redwork embroidery patterns. As you can see by the lovely pattern any color of embroidery floss can be used. No sewing machines to drag along just a simple sewing basket.

3. Studio Time / Studio Project “Whimsy’s Butterflies” – with Cindy Casciato
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner to Intermediate

WhimsyCome and join me for a sit and sew class that allows you to set the pace. You can choose to work on my Studio Project, “Whimsy’s Butterflies” or finish some projects you already have underway.

"Whimsy’s Butterfly" quilt is from my new book, "Stash with Splash Quilts". Girls just want to have fun so why not join me this weekend and make a quick quilt from pre-cut squares. We will make hearts and half-squares all from squares. Once you learn my magic triangle formula for half-squares you will never need to cut out a square with a 1/8” measurement again. It will be hard to resist the big purple cat and the easy quick- turn appliqué method to make Whimsy and the heart shaped butterflies. Just have fun with this pattern and sew to your heart’s content. I will send you all the cutting directions ahead so you can spend your time sewing in the studio. As always everyone benefits from the Show n’ Share of the latest quilting notions, so please bring your best tip or notion along to share. E-mail me at cindyquilts@neo.rr.com

4. Roses of Sharon – with Sharon Chase
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

RosesThe background of the Roses of Sharon Quilt features simple patchwork squares. We will discuss using the design wall to place color where we want it and will talk about the merits of strip piecing and fussy cutting. We will then make the modified log cabin block roses. These roses are simply strips of fabric added to a 5-sided center in the log cabin fashion. We will gradually curve the edges of the rose by using more strips applied at a narrower angle. It is easier to do than it sounds! We use a template to cut the final circle shape. No paper piecing is involved here. The leaves are foundation, or paper pieced, but is easy to master, as only one basic shape is involved. The last technique taught will be invisible appliqué. We will center the roses on their paper-pieced leaves, and then we will use invisible thread and the blind hem stitch for the appliqué itself. The rose/leaf combination will then be appliquéd to the background patchwork in the same way. You will have a "taste" of 4 techniques in the lovely garden inspired quilt.

5. One Block Wonder – with Rita Fishel
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner to Intermediate

One Block WonderThe “One Block Wonder Quilt” is made from one fabric and one shape into a one-of-a-kind quilt. This quilt design is a mesmerizing study in kaleidoscope-type piecing. Pieced from 6 - 60* triangle cuts of identical placements across the fabric. Big pieces and clever shortcut methods make these quilts go together fast. Every quilt made with this fascinating method looks completely unique. No two quilts will look alike. This fun and easy process compels one to work feverishly until the masterpiece is complete!

6. Playing with Jelly and Eight Pointed Stars – by Mary Huey
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

JellystarsAren’t jelly rolls fun? It’s so tempting to buy every one you see, but many of the patterns created for them look alike. That look a-like syndrome has changed with Marti Michel’s two Stripper Sets of templates. In this workshop, you’ll see just how easy 8-pointed stars are to piece with precisely engineered rotary cutting templates.

I promise you will be amazed! These easy to use rotary cutting templates have opened up a whole new world of quilt designs that would have been too difficult to attempt with traditional methods of strip cutting and quick piecing techniques. In addition to the class sample I will show samples of other quilt designs you can create with a jelly roll and this template set. Two template sets are used in this workshop -- the Stripper Set ($14) and Set B ($21). If you don't already own them, you may purchase them from me or rent templates during the workshop for $5. If you decide to purchase them, I'll credit the $5 towards the purchase price.
