QUILTESCAPE 2008 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

1. Peggy Bingham – Attic Windows
This class will open a world of windows to you! The Attic Windows blocks date back to the late 1800’s and remain popular today. It is so elegant in its simplicity – only three pieces! Using the wonderful scenic fabric available today, it is so easy to make an Attic Windows quilt that truly looks out on a picturesque panorama. Or use juvenile novelty fabrics to make an I-Spy Window! The options are endless!
This class will teach you the basics of inset piecing with some tricks to make the blocks quick, easy, fun, and foolproof! This is an excellent workshop for the beginner who needs guidance with this basic piecing technique and the veteran quilter looking for a relaxing, enjoyable weekend. We will do two wall-hangings. The first will be a traditional, basic Attic Windows to get us started. Then, we’ll have more fun with Attic Windows on a second wall-hanging – a nine-block Attic Window with a straight-on, center perspective. Don't worry - it is so much easier than it sounds! The resulting wall-hanging is absolutely stunning! This class will turn you into an Attic Windows lover like me! These are patterns you will make again and again! $15.00 pattern fee payable to Peggy

Julie’s “Chocolate Covered Cherries” is a collection of 1800’s reproduction double-pinks and browns. Quilt Size: 72” x 84”

Everyone will benefit from sharing their latest sewing tips, new notions and showing their projects. By popular request the classroom will be open all day Friday. You may choose to come down on Thursday night or arrive early Friday morning to set up your class equipment. The formal teaching doesn’t begin until Friday afternoon; however you can work on your own projects until that time.
More about the Studio Project: “Leaves of Shawnee”. Bring your fat quarters and your scraps to make these wonderful traditional Ohio Star and Diamond in a Square blocks that I have improved for quick and easy construction. Freezer paper templates are included in the pattern for the leaves of the buckeye, sugar maple, shagbark hickory, and the sweet gum trees. You will be able to complete the quilt top in class. 7. Chris Marty – Betty’s Scrappy Star Medallion - A Thymbles Signature Pattern
The Scrappy Star Medallion is a beautiful elongated star that incorporates 2 primary colors that gently float from the star to the borders, both on-square and on-point. This scrappy wall hanging is a good stash user. The pattern lends to your creativity and may use more or less fabrics depending on the effect you wish to achieve. You will enjoy this traditional strip pieced project. It never ceases to amaze me how the pattern changes with color and texture choices of every student. This quilt truly is a chameleon. The scrappy look is achieved with the stark contrast of lights and darks. The color float is achieved by the use of 2 contrasting colors picked from your primary focus fabric. You may wish to bring extra fabric to audition for further choices, if you wish a stronger or less intense color placement during construction of this piece.

8. Mary Lou Wright – Windows in My Garden
This project uses the techniques of strip piecing, chain piecing, and quick tricks for cutting the logs without using the rotary cutter and also incorporates the use of the bias tape maker. Ideas will be given for quilting from the back of the quilt.
"Windows in My Garden" is based on an elongated Court House Steps, (a Log Cabin variation). It's easy to make, and fun for all levels of quilt making. Choose the colors you enjoy. Go through your fabric stash and consider "more is better", plus it's always fun to visit the vendors.
The quilt, "Windows in My Garden" will give you flowers in winter to quilt for the anticipation of spring. There are two different looking blocks, one for stylized leaves and the other gives the appearance of flowers. Select a floral fabric for the border, or make an easy fusible appliqué border. Using a bias tape maker is a quick way to make the vine.
